I know this is a taboo subject. ..... I have been reading alot lately about funds of Bali and where they are going, In Bali $ for Islam churches from the central Govt. flows 5x fold or more than for hindu temples.... the list goes on and on... Could Bali ever be its own country? I dont think they would get much support- no country wants to buck up against the indonesian Govt. -- and a few radicals--- I have read some letters sent to the Gov. Dewa Beratha..From Jakarta and they were threatning in nature.... Jakarta should just give up Bali- they appear to think of bali as a red headed stepchild anyways--- But its up to the Balanise and the heads of balanise to pursue this scenario. I do believe they are being held "captive" and are not willing to speak out---- I suppose it is in their nature and beliefs to try to have harmony with the central Govt.. ---- But they could at least propose something or ask..... nothing wrong in asking... What do you think 1. How would bali be different if they were a nation? 2. Would the central Govt. "raise hell" if Bali asked to seperate? 3.Would any nation support Bali if they decided to seperate? 4. Would Bali be a better vacation destination in such a scenario? 5.Would bali be overun with commercialization (another singapore?) more malls, casino's... etc Ponder with me on my pad....... Frog

Had they passed that stupid anti-pornography law, I would be all for a Balinese state. As it is currently, it's not so bad.

Let me try to answer your questions BRIEFLY. My opinions are:1. How would Bali be different if they were a nation?
In the beginning (first few years) not much different from now. But soon, its economy would collapse.2. Would the central Govt. "raise hell" if Bali asked to seperate? ?
Are you kidding? Of course the Indonesian Government would raise hell. Look what has been happening in Irian (which became part of Indonesia after a fraudulent, U.N.-supervised "Act of Free Choice," in 1969), in Aceh (since the end of the 19th Century), and more recently in Timtim.3.Would any nation support Bali if they decided to seperate? ?
Absolutely not. What would be "in" for them?4. Would Bali be a better vacation destination in such a scenario? ?
I don't see why, but at least the Balinese would be keeping the approximately 80% of the tourist money, now going to the Jakarata mafia.5.Would bali be overun with commercialization (another singapore?) more malls, casino's... etc?
I don't think so, because it takes money to build malls, casinos, etc., and nobody would be willing to invest, because of the repression from Jakarta, sure to follow. An independent Bali would never happen because Balinese. although very much aware and proud of their ethnicity and culture, feel that they are part of the great Indonesian family.

Sorry, I forgot to mention the fiasco of the Republic of the South Moluccas in 1950. :(

"Bali" is already a "country", in its own way. But it's still stuck, slap dab in the middle of the "greater" Indonesia. I've listened to many Balinese in the past who've toyed with the idea of cutting their ties with the Jakarta administration. Really turning Bali into a separate, independent country. No matter how noble (and brave) these ideas might be, Bali has no resources, apart from its people/culture and the adoring (and lately, struggling), tourism industry.Balinese are not stupid. There are many who've had more than enough of being re-colonized by "Indonesia" (the central government). If they ever manage to pull the plug, who will stand up for them? Look at what happened in East Timor, for example. And what's still happening in Irian Jaya.I tend to agree with Tin-tin's take on it. And Allan has a good point, too... ...there would be no electricity...
I hope Bali can build yesterday tomorrow. :)
